PREVIEW HERE
Toulouse begin the defence of their Heineken Cup crown with this mouth-watering match-up against familiar foes London Wasps at the Stade Municipal.

The hosts are bidding for a fifth title but they have never before successfully retained Europe's top prize, with Wasps ruining one of their previous attempts to do so, in 2004, courtesy of Rob Howley's famous last-gasp try at Twickenham.

However, the aristocrats of French rugby will be confident of exacting a modicum of revenge over a Wasps side which has proven maddeningly inconsistent so far this season - mixing up a big win over Leicester with away defeats to Newcastle and Gloucester.

Toulouse - Player to Watch: Clement Poitrenaud has awful memories of Wasps' 2004 smash and grab but has been restored to his favoured fullback position for this clash. His running from deep will be helped by a familiar wing pairing as Cedric Heymans and Vincent Clerc also start in the back-three.

Toulouse - Team News: David Skrela and Byron Kelleher will steer the ship from halfback, while the back-row wheel of fortune has landed on an exciting combination of skipper Thierry Dusautoir, Yannick Nyanga and Shaun Sowerby.

Wasps - Player to Watch: Dave Walder may be small in stature but he has been a calming influence on Wasps so far this season. He will need to bring all of his creative nous to the party if Wasps are to nick a result.

Wasps - Team News: Mark van Gisbergen returns to the side at fullback, shifting Richard Haughton to the wing alongside Tom Varndell. Andy Powell starts at No.8 ahead of Dan Ward-Smith, who is named on the bench.

Key Battle: The breakdown is always crucial and it is imperative that Joe Worsley, Tom Rees and Andy Powell secure at least parity in this area if they are to have any chance of pulling off an away win.

Trivia: Toulouse may be the reigning Heineken Cup champions but Munster occupy top spot in the ERC's club rankings.

Stats: Only two sides have conceded more points than Wasps in the Aviva Premiership this season - Newcastle and Leeds, the league's bottom two.

Quote Unquote:

"If you are poor in a game, it doesn't matter who you are, you're out. Competitiveness and honesty and humility - that is what drives Toulouse." - Toulouse fly-half Frederic Michalak in The Daily Telegraph

"Everyone at the club is delighted to be back in the Heineken Cup this season and what a way to open our campaign, against the reigning champions. There is a great deal of excitement throughout the squad and everyone is focused on ensuring a strong performance." - Wasps director of rugby Tony Hanks

Prediction: Wasps have plenty of talent and a proud European history but they have shipped a lot of points already this season and are likely to concede quite a few more in Toulouse. Home win.
